Symptoms worth discussing
Tell the team about stiffness, swelling, pain on stairs, reduced walking distance or a knee that feels unreliable. Symptoms after a fall or twist need a clear injury history. Knee pain alone does not identify arthritis or a ligament injury.
What your assessment may cover
Your visit may include a discussion of activity changes, previous injuries and medical advice, followed by observation of knee movement, leg strength, walking and sit-to-stand tasks. Bring existing reports and any brace or walking aid you use.
Your rehabilitation approach
Match activity to your starting ability
Discuss manageable walking and daily tasks, and how to monitor the knee’s response to activity.
Progress strength and control
A tailored programme may work on the thigh, hip and knee together, progressing resistance and movement range as appropriate.
Practise meaningful tasks
Review chair transfers, stairs or walking endurance against your own goals rather than a fixed number of sessions.
A plan you can use between visits
Ask what to practise, how often to do it and which changes should prompt a review. Agree on goals that matter to you and tell the team when an exercise is difficult to follow. Session frequency, fees and recovery expectations should be discussed after assessment. No fixed recovery timeline or result is guaranteed.
Frequently asked questions
Is all knee pain caused by arthritis?
No. Symptoms can have several causes. An assessment and, when appropriate, medical review help guide the next step without relying on a self-diagnosis.
Should I avoid stairs completely?
The right activity level depends on your symptoms and any medical restrictions. Ask for advice on pacing and alternatives rather than following a blanket rule.
Can rehabilitation help after a knee operation?
Ask about the post-surgery pathway. Your surgeon’s precautions, procedure and recovery stage must guide the programme.
